Funen is an island in the middle of the Danish Kingdom – number two in size of all the islands. It is characterized by an undulating and hilly landscape with a lot of fruit gardens and quickset hedges and the many half-timbered farmhouses. South of Funen the South Funen Archipelago with a lot of different islands of all sizes offers beautiful sounds, bays and coves.
Funen is connected with Sealand by the Great Belt bridge and with Jutland by the Little Belt bridge, and in the South Funen Archipelago small and big ferry boats and several bridges are the connection to the surrounding world.
Along the Great Belt coast and at the southern part of the Little Belt coast you will find fine sandy beaches and calm waters, ideal for bathing. In Little Belt the current might be heavy, so it is a good idea to respect the local instructions. Also the South Funen Archipelago offers great bathing possibilities, and as the distances are short, you can always find a fine and sheltered beach.
The best way to experience the charm of the hills, the quickset hedges and the half-timbered farmhouses is on a trip from Svendborg to Fåborg. North of Fåborg you have the undulating and beautiful hills of Svanninge with steep slopes and deep combes as a result of the last glacial age14,000 years ago. From the top of the hills there is a fantastic view over the South Funen Archipelago and the areas of South-West Funen with a varied flora and fauna.
Funen – Fyns Hoved – North of Kerteminde in the north eastern part of Funen you have the peninsula Hindsholm with a range of small islands and tongues of land like for instance Romsø and Enebærodde. The landscape has been shaped by the glacial ages in Denmark, and there are many natural areas with a fantastic plant and animal life. The low waters of the bays of the Belt are very popular places for the many birds and ducks to breed and rest. On the northernmost point of Hindsholm you have the beautiful nature area called Fyns Hoved with a wide view to land and sea. In the research and experience centre called Fjord and Belt in Kerteminde you can get some very useful information on the environment and nature of the Belt – for instance seals and porpoises.
