Ærø has a beautiul location in the South Funen Archipelago. In order to get to the beautiful island, you have to sail with the Ærøfærgen from either Fynshav, Faaborg or Svendborg. The ride takes 60 - 75 minutes to either Søby or Ærøskøbing. Here you can get to completely gear down - there is no stress on the small island which makes it perfect for a quiet and relaxing holiday. No matter where you go on the island, you will always be able to see the ocean - and some roads even have views of both the South Funen Archipelago and the Baltic Sea. The proximity to the ocean also means you can easily go for a swim or a quick dip in the clear water.
The island has just over 6000 residents and is an 88 km2 large moraine island. Ærø is, besides the ocean, surrounded by Funen, Langeland, Slesvig-Holsten and Als, as well as one of the smallest municipalities. Ærø's country-side varies from large fields to small, cosy villages. The small villages are time warps with beautiful half-timbered houses, small town squares, cobblestone streets and numerous hollyhocks.
Remember to visit the old maritime village Marstal, which offers maritime culture, shipping industry and a museum of the island's naval history.
Ærø has eateries of every kind - especially during the summer season when the many restaurant managers are ready to serve good, local produce. Many of Ærø's restaurants serve freshly-caught fish - perfect for lunch on your holiday home vacation. On your way back from a day full of experiences you can stop at the road-side stalls and buy honey, strawberries or cherries.
