South West Zealand is known for its long coastlines ideal for fishermen and windsurfers, and for swimming, of course. In the region you find cosy towns as e.g. Korsør, Skælskør and Slagelse as well as a lot of historic castles and manors.
The nature of South West Zealand is highly influenced by the sea. All along the Great Belt you can find a lot of good beaches, e.g. at Jammerland Bugt and Musholm Bugt (bays) as well as the impressive Stillinge Strand, a wide beach with dunes and fine sand. The beach also offers a view of the exceptional Great Belt Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in Europe. Beside the good beaches the area also has large woods, especially near the town of Sorø. In the northern part of the region you find Tissø, Denmark's fourth largest lake. The lake is an important resting area for water birds and therefore a well-visited area for bird watchers.
Slagelse is the most important shopping town of South West Zealand with cosy pedestrian zones and shopping centres. The town also has one of the largest military barracks in Denmark and every Wednesday you can watch the horse guards riding through the town. South of Slagelse you find Skælskør surrounded by the beautiful Skælskør fiord where you have the opportunity to sail the fiord. But the town also has one of Denmark's most idyllic town environments with half-timbered houses and cobblestones.
In the southern part of the region you find a number of interesting castles and manors, all within short distance of each other. Start e.g. by driving to Espe Gods (estate) ca. 8 kilometres north of Skælskør. The estate offers a spectacular view of the Great Belt. From here you can go to Borreby Gods (estate) a few kilometres south of Skælskør, one of Denmark's oldest and best kept renaissance castles built in 1556. Continue ca. 16 kilometres east to Holsteinborg Slot (castle) at the village Bisserup. The castle was one of the places the world known author H. C. Andersen often visited. Another ca. 30 kilometres east from this you will find Gavnø Slot (castle) near Næstved. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park.
